If you are starting a new forest or nature-based program (including outdoor preschool, childcare and homeschool classes), this intensive online course can help you get started! We address a range of topics including:

Honing your vision, mission, and educational philosophy
Establishing program basics like daily rhythm, class sizes, schedules
Business planning/determining a business structure
Locations and partners
Licensing considerations
How to set tuition, compensate staff, and create a program budget
Policies and practices for your parent handbook
Creating greater diversity, equity, and inclusion in your program
Safety and risk management, including liability insurance needs
Finding and hiring great staff
Marketing your program
Evaluation methods

The format of this interactive course is a combination of facilitated discussion, small group work among participants, and asynchronous independent learning experiences. We provide many templates and resources to help you develop an authentic, placed-based approach to your program. Please note this is not a prerecorded, on-demand course. It is interactive so we can learn together!

SCHEDULE

We’ve designed this online course with a paced structure to help you absorb the material and build your program step by step over six months. The course includes six facilitated online sessions, each held from 1:30–3 p.m. (EST).

Between sessions, you’ll complete self-directed reading and planning activities, which require a minimum of one hour between class meetings. To get the most out of the course, please ensure you can dedicate time to reviewing materials and reflecting on how to apply new policies and concepts to your unique circumstances.

Upon successful completion, you will receive a professional development certificate.

*NEW SELF-PACED OPTION!

Most folks have many nuanced questions when they start a new program, so we always suggest joining the live online course if possible to ask your questions and learn from the experiences of others (schedule above). But...we also know you may be juggling many responsibilities and need the flexibility of a self-paced, on-demand course. For the first time ever, we have decided to offer a new self-paced option! This means we will hold regular class sessions (schedule above) and then follow up with bite-sized video recordings and resources for all of the self-paced learners. You will still experience the content and topics that are covered in the live sessions, but you can do so at your pace.

Additionally, we will include one 30-minute consultation session for each self-paced attendee. This will be scheduled to take place at the conclusion of the course in October and November and is completely optional.

Because this is the first time we are offering a self-paced option, we hope you will provide feedback in real time throughout the course!

MEET YOUR COURSE FACILITATOR!

Monica Wiedel-Lubinski, Executive Director of ANBE

Founder/cofounder of three nature preschool programs in Maryland and consultant to countless others starting forest and nature schools in the U.S. and abroad, Monica brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to help you jump-start your own nature-based program! She is the coauthor of award-winning Nature Play Workshop for Families (Quarto, 2020) and recently released Nature-Based Early Childhood Education (NAEYC, 2025). Monica earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art Educ. (K-12) and Master’s degree in Early Childhood Ed. from Towson University, Baltimore, MD and completed year-long graduate fellowship with UMBC/UMASS in 2024. Monica is deeply engaged in the Outdoor Preschool Licensing pilot, enacted in 2023 in Maryland as she advocates for more equitable access to nature-based education. She is a wife and mother of two and enjoys spending time in nature with her family.

Kirsten Mize (she/her), ANBE Program Coordinator

Goucher College graduate, Kirsten Mize, is delighted to serve the ANBE community as Program Coordinator, curating high-quality training for nature-based educators of all different walks. With a Masters in Education (Focus: At-Risk and Diverse Students) and a Bachelors in Music (Focus: Vocal Performance), Kirsten brings over a decade of diverse teaching experience and pedagogical knowledge to ANBE. She has always had a deep connection with nature and believes strongly in holistic teaching methods, the power of play, and cultivating wonder. When she is not at ANBE, Kirsten works as a voice actor independently from her home studio in Baltimore, Maryland and has lent her voice to musicals, operas, stage plays, podcasts, video games, and radio plays. But probably her most important job is that of mother to one sweet little boy who has inherited his mother's love for music and the outdoors.

Kyra Stephenson is the Director of Helmer Nature Center in the West Irondequoit Central School District and the founder of Nature Mind Solutions LLC. An award-winning environmental educator, she has dedicated her career to advancing nature-based learning, helping schools and communities use nature to foster curiosity, well-being, academic growth, and environmental guardianship. Kyra developed and teaches, Integrative Pedagogy with Nature, the first graduate course in nature-based learning at SUNY Brockport. She is passionate about building partnerships that connect people with nature and inspire the next generation of environmental guardians.

Alyssa Catholdi (she/her) - Humane Education Supervisor at Lollypop Farm

Alyssa is the Humane Education Supervisor at Lollypop Farm, where she uses her love for animals and nature to help people build deeper empathy for the world around them. With a Master’s in Social Justice & Education and a Bachelor’s in Childhood/Special Education, she draws on her years as an inclusive school teacher in New York and England to create welcoming, hands-on learning experiences for all students. Her goal is to make education fair, accessible, and inspiring, encouraging everyone to become kind advocates for animals and the environment. When she’s not teaching, Alyssa loves staying active outdoors by running, hiking, and enjoying water activities, before heading home to her cat, Bean.

Amanda Little (she/her) - Environmental Educator, Maplewood Nature Center

Amanda Little is currently an Environmental Educator at the newly renovated Maplewood Nature Center, Rochester's first urban nature center. Amanda has worked to provide environmental programming throughout the City, from R-Centers to summer camps. Amanda is passionate about connecting kids to nature and providing opportunities to inspire curiosity of the world around them! In her free time, she volunteers with birds of prey at Braddock Bay Raptor Research and loves spending time with her family outdoors.

Tressa Andrews - Notchcliff Nature Programs Director & Lead Teacher/Forest School Guide

Tressa is honored to serve as the Director of Notchcliff Nature Programs also teach in the Homeschool in the Forest Program. She is a lifelong resident of Harford County, MD with over 25 years of experience in education, 20 of those dedicated to Preschool, along with a deep passion for early childhood development and nature-based learning. Tressa holds a B.A. in Early and Elementary Education from Notre Dame of Maryland University and is a Level 1 and 2 certified Nature-Based and Forest Teacher through ANBE. Prior to joining Notchcliff, she served as a Preschool Director for five years. She believes that when young children learn through nature, they build creativity, empathy, and a meaningful connection to the world around them, which is an essential foundation for growing into kind, responsible members of their communities. Outside the classroom, Tressa enjoys photography, bird watching, exploring the outdoors, and engaging in all forms of art.

Leena Singh - Notchcliff Lead Teacher and Forest School Guide

Leena is a second year teacher at Notchcliff Nature Programs working in both the Homeschool in the Forest Program and the Preschool classes. She was first introduced to nature-based education several years ago while working as an environmental educator at the Robinson Nature Center. A coworker there mentioned she might connect with these teaching modalities; turns out she was right and it stuck ever since. After a couple of detours - including a B.Sc. in psychology and pre-medical studies from the University of Maryland, obtaining my M.B.A. at Loyola University of Maryland, and even a couple of years working at T. Rowe Price she eventually found her way back to the place she always belonged - in the forest with the kids. Leena says that Notchcliff truly changed the trajectory of her life. The blend of outdoor, play-based/child-led learning, and the strong emphasis on community all inspire her every day to continue on the teaching journey. She is constantly witness to and amazed by the kind, creative, and thoughtful people her students are growing into as she learns alongside them to listen to the true teacher - the natural world around us.

Nature-Based Teacher Certification: Level I (online - Fall) (Tuesday, September 22, 2026)

We are thrilled to offer our Nature-Based Teacher Certification as an online option! You will gain a deeper understanding of nature pedagogy and practices as you earn this introductory credential. To date, we have certified more than one thousand teachers from all 50 states and 25 countries, each gaining strategies and tools for unique nature-based settings. Now it's your turn!

Our 36-hour course provides in-depth study of best practices in nature-based early childhood education to prepare you for meaningful outdoor learning experiences. We draw from experienced educators with diverse perspectives to help you hone your own approaches to nature-based ECE. Whether you are in a formal school or childcare setting or working in a nature or forest preschool, this course is designed to meet the needs of early childhood educators working in any setting.

SCHEDULE

Tuesdays/Thursdays: Facilitated discussions on key topics
Wednesdays: Cohort meetings and/or Guest Presenters

Course meets live from 4PM - 6PM (PST)/ 6PM - 8PM (CST)/ 7PM - 9PM (EST) on Tuesdays and Thursdays with additional time built in for on-demand content. Wednesdays are reserved for guest presenters and group meeting support. There are a total of six consecutive weeks of online sessions with presenters and within small cohorts. Additional clock hours include a variety of presenters and one-on-one Mentor Meetings. Flexible, self-directed learning will take place centered on outdoor skills and experiences, which you must provide documentation of. Upon registration, we will provide you with a complete list of materials needed for the course.

Fall Speaker Series: Back to Nature School! (Wednesday, September 30, 2026)

This four-part series is packed with practical approaches to help inspire teachers and parents alike at the start of the school year! "Celebrating The Natural Cycle - The Cold Season!" with McCadden and Honey Sweet Harmony

Wednesday, September 30th from 7-9 PM (EST) [2 hrs]

Celebrating the cycles of nature helps us synchronize ourselves with our nature neighborhoods. Join eco-connection mentors Honey Sweet Harmony to honor the coming of cold season! Participants will be guided through several ancestrally-rooted nature-connection activities, including learning songs particularly suited to multigenerational, community-style singing. You can then draw inspiration from participation in this gathering to design activities for your own household, educational programs, and community. These seasonal gatherings are highly experiential. With a focus on interactions among attendees, we highly encourage live attendance, even if you need to eat, drink, move/stretch physically, take a break from looking at the digital screen and just listen, have a youngster of your household present with you, or other forms of flexibility that will make live attendance possible.

"Weekly Routines & Rituals of Nature Connection" with Sherri Dauer

Join us for a fun, practical workshop on simple ways to help kids—from babies to teens—connect with nature all year long. You’ll leave with easy weekly and monthly rhythms you can use at home, school, or in a nature program.

"Seeing Math Everywhere" with Andrea Manka

Wednesday, November 18th from 7-8:30 PM (EST) [1.5 hrs]

Participants will explore how to use their natural surroundings to teach student-centered mathematics across a range of ages and developmental levels. Drawing on Andrea’s experience teaching fully outdoors with learners from toddlerhood through fourth grade, participants will consider how to adapt mathematical concepts and topics for outdoor learning, including for older students. Together, we will explore how to scaffold lessons in nature, determine which materials are needed, and create opportunities for students to discover mathematics through observation and exploration. Most importantly, participants will learn how to move beyond simply taking math outside to revealing the mathematics already present in the natural world.

"Adventurous Nature Play: Helpful Safety Routines and Approaches to Assessing Risks and Benefits" with Monica Weidel-Lubinski

Wednesday, December 9th from 7-8 PM (EST) [1 hr]

This session invites nature‑based educators to explore how adventurous play helps children flourish when safety is woven seamlessly into daily practice. We’ll dig into practical routines for setting clear yet flexible boundaries, monitoring children with confidence, and recognizing the subtle cues that tell you when to step in to guide play... and when to step back to let learning unfold. Participants will learn simple, effective tools for assessing risks and benefits in real time, supporting developmentally appropriate risk‑taking, and creating outdoor environments where children feel both free and well‑supported. This session is designed to strengthen your everyday safety practices while preserving curiosity and wonder at the heart of nature‑based learning.

Week #1: McCadden (ki/kin) - Honey Sweet Harmony

Honey Sweet Harmony is an interspecies creativity-catalyzing mentorship constellation. McCadden holds a MA/ABD in cultural anthropology of theatre from the University of Chicago, and BA with honors in Comparative Literature from Hamilton College, as well as mentoring from indigenous elders of Turtle Island. Ki collaborates with many helpers such as animals, plants, trees, and stones! Together kin* are committed to remembering regenerative cultural patterns with all ages from infants to seniors. Deep nature connection mentors and ancestral skills facilitators, kin specialize in stories, music, and movement, eco-connective healing arts, ceremony facilitation, and grief / peace tending. For nearly 30 years kin have taught experiential enrichment programs in a diverse range of public and private schools, camps, community centers, spiritual-based and nature-based organizations. Kin have facilitated many forms of multigenerational community events inspired by nature’s rhythms, and have served as helpers at indigenous peace treaty renewals and peace tree plantings. Kin also offer private mentoring and eco-healing sessions for individuals, families, and organizations.

Week #2: Sherri Dauer (she/her) - Executive Director of Forest Time Kindergarten

Sherri Dauer is the founder of Forest Time Kindergarten & Homeschool and a Level 3 ANBE educator and trainer. She has traveled to Switzerland, Spain, and France to learn from different forest schools and loves traveling, spending time with her two granddaughters, and sitting around a good campfire.

Week #3: Andrea Manka (she/her) - Teacher at Starchild Nature School

Andrea Manka, MEd, is an educator with a passion for supporting learners at every stage of development, from toddlerhood through adulthood. She draws inspiration from the natural world and enjoys integrating her background in mathematics and curriculum development with nature-based learning. Andrea currently teaches 6-7 year-olds at Star Child Nature School, a fully outdoor nature school in New Jersey.

Join us again with our partners at Schuylkill Center in Philly for an exciting day of learning! Just when you need it most, this Autumn Reset will energize and inspire your practice! Packed with tips, tools, and strategies, you will walk away feeling empowered and ready to engage in nature-based learning and play.

Our Professional Learning Retreats bring together experts in the field of nature-based education to share ideas and practices with a variety of hands-on sessions. ANBE will provide a professional development certificate at the conclusion of the event which can be used in some states towards continuing education hours. Please check with your state department of education! Remember to dress for the weather, as most of this training takes place outdoors, rain or shine. Coffee/tea with lite breakfast and lunch is included, please bring your canteen for drinks throughout the day.

Nature-Based Teacher Certification: Level III (Thursday, October 08, 2026)

If you've made it this far, congratulations for progressing to the capstone Level III Nature-Based Teacher Certification course! This registration is for a hybrid course with monthly online learning (Oct. 2026 - June 2027) followed by a culminating long weekend of training and celebration at Carrie Murray Nature Center in Baltimore, MD during the Levels 1 & 2 training (Wed.-Fri., July 14-16, 2027).

Our 36-hour capstone course combines deepening nature connection with a well-rounded approach to nature-based education, advocacy, and leadership. Offered as a hybrid course, the format includes online meetings with both live and self-directed time and field assignments that you will complete in your school or program setting. An in-person gathering is held to further learning, sharing, and celebration as a community.

Time commitment for the capstone course is 36 clock hours, plus time required to complete field assignments. Prerequisites: Attendees must complete levels 1 & 2 prior to taking level 3; see web for complete description.

Course Description:
The capstone level of the certification combines deepening nature connection with a well-rounded approach to nature-based education, advocacy, and leadership. The hybrid course format includes online meetings with both live and self-directed time and a professional practicum that you will complete in your school or program setting. The in-person gathering includes further learning and sharing as a community. The time commitment for the capstone course is 36 clock hours, plus time required to complete the practicum.

Topics of Study:

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in NBE: How can nature-based programs provide greater access to nature-based education? How can programs increase advocacy and inclusion efforts to support greater access to programs? Discover real life approaches to DEI and consider how to authentically work toward your own DEI policies and daily practices.

Mentoring & Reflective Teaching Practices: We know that the most effective teachers reflect on children’s needs and development in highly individualized ways. Likewise, we will consider how to reflect on our own interactions with children, families, colleagues, and the natural world to maintain a positive growth mindset necessary to thrive as a nature-based teacher. We will also consider the role of utilizing (and being) mentors in our teaching journey.

Financial Planning: Creating, or even just understanding, a program budget need not be complicated! Thoughtful budgets help ensure accessibility to your program with financial assistance and extra gear considerations, but that is only the start. Beyond basic supplies, family events, and guest presenters there are other considerations around liability insurance, gifts for teachers, and a contingency should you need to bring in support staff. These are the tip of the iceberg! Teacher pay is directly related to income and expenses, so this insight is useful whether you are currently a teacher or administrator. Assessing Your Program: One of the best ways we can improve the quality of what we offer to our learning communities is to actively engage in program assessment. This session explores several approaches to program assessment and helps you hone in on the values and attributes you most want to evaluate as part of the process.

Spirituality and Human-Nature Connection: One of the reasons families value a nature-based education is because wonder, awe, and curiosity are central to this approach to learning. Together we examine how these attributes support spirituality and help instill a deeper sense of connectedness to the natural world.

Naturalist Knowledge: Nature’s wonders are intricate and complex - we can spend a lifetime discovering them! Integral to our work as nature-based teachers, we will continue to explore the land, building on our naturalist knowledge of local habitats, wildlife, and possible risks to mitigate during outdoor learning. For our in-person gathering, we will incorporate hands-on earth skills as we continue to develop personal nature connection in community as a cohort of teachers.

Winter is on the way! Join us in Columbia, Maryland for an inspiring day of training full of ways to help children welcome the winter season. This hands-on training will awaken your senses, kindle curiosity, and spark more ideas for outdoor learning with young children.

Outdoor Teacher Retreats brings together experts in the field of nature-based early learning to share ideas and practices, with a variety of workshops to choose from. ANBE will provide a professional development certificate at the conclusion of the event (pending 6 MSDE clock hours). Please dress for the weather, as most of this training takes place outdoors, rain or shine. Coffee/tea with lite breakfast and lunch are included on Saturday, but remember your canteen for drinks throughout the day.

We are thrilled to offer our Nature-Based Teacher Certification - Level II as an online option! You will further your knowledge and application of nature pedagogy as you earn this intermediate credential, building off of skills and practices you learned in Level 1. (Note: You must successfully complete our Nature-Based Teacher Certification Level 1 before you can register for Level 2.)

Our 36-hour course provides in-depth study of best practices in nature-based early childhood education to prepare you for meaningful outdoor learning experiences. We draw from experienced educators with diverse perspectives to help you hone your own approaches to nature-based early childhood education. Whether you are in a formal school or childcare setting or working in a nature or forest preschool, this course is designed to meet the needs of nature-based educators working in any setting.

SCHEDULE
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays: 4PM - 6PM (PST)/ 6PM - 8PM (CST)/ 7PM - 9PM (EST)

There are a total of six consecutive weeks of online sessions with a mixture of live lectures and skills workshops, full class discussion, guest presenters and small cohort meetings.

Flexible, self-directed learning will take place centered on outdoor skills and experiences, which you must provide documentation of. Upon registration, we will provide you with a complete list of materials needed for the course.

Join us at Night For Nature: An Evening in Bloom. Held at Checkerspot Brewing Co. in Baltimore, MD, this festive evening includes live music, bespoke foraged fare, and opportunities for giving in support of nature-based education.

This is a dressy casual event. Bring a friend to celebrate and savor this springtime benefit for the Association for Nature-Based Education (ANBE).

Night for Nature highlights:

How does my ticket support ANBE's mission?

Supports nature-based professional development including free teacher training and networking opportunities, practical tools and resources, and scholarship aid. Our vital professional development allows teachers to share the benefits of nature-based education with thousands of children each year. Your support helps make training accessible to teachers across the nation and around the world.
Supports Notchcliff Nature Programs in the greater Baltimore region which provides immersive nature-based learning and play in partnership with a retirement community. Notchcliff is our 'lab forest school' serving children, families, and senior citizens, as well as teachers who visit for training. Your support helps provide financial aid to families in need and develop the outdoor classrooms, gardens, and nature play spaces at Notchcliff.
Funds Outdoor Learning Programs in Baltimore for nearly 150 preschool and kindergarten students at a Title 1 elementary school and Seedlings caregiver/child outdoor playgroups at local Judy Centers in underserved communities.
Supports advocacy efforts to increase access to nature-based education. ANBE is a leading advocate in Maryland providing resources and support to the Maryland State Department of Education (and participating providers) engaged in the Outdoor Preschool Licensing Pilot. We also offer leadership through the Outdoor Learning Partnership at the State level and through advocacy efforts with partners across the U.S.

We are excited to learn with you once again during the Level 2: Intermediate Nature-Based Teacher Certification! (Registration is for live, in-person certification.)

This five-day, 36-hour course builds on what you learned during the Level 1 introductory course, diving deeper into best practices and helping you hone approaches to nature-based early childhood education specific to your learning environment. The intermediate course examines more nuanced facets of running a nature-based program, managing/mentoring teachers, and promoting your program. We continue to draw from experienced educators and explore diverse perspectives in NBECE throughout the week. You will also take time to enhance your personal nature connection as an extension of this deep, important work. (Note: Attendees must complete the level 1 introductory course prior to taking level 2; see web for complete description.)
